Domains are now People 33%, Process 41%, Business Environment 26%; about 60% of questions are agile or hybrid; AI and sustainability appear inside scenarios; you get 180 questions in 240 minutes, starting with a case-study section; and project experience can now come from the last 10 years.
What are the latest PMP exam changes?
These changes are in effect for every candidate who sits the exam from 9 July 2026. Many books, videos and question banks online still describe the old exam, so check that your material matches what you see below.

Coming on 1 December 2026: live, instructor-led training hours will count toward the 35-hour requirement only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider or an eligible accredited academic programme. Self-paced courses from any provider still count, and training completed before 1 December 2026 counts under the current rules.
Is another change coming? PMI has not announced one. Its three-to-five-year review cycle points to roughly 2029–2031, so treat any claim of a “2027 PMP exam change” as speculation until PMI publishes it.
Why did PMI change the PMP exam?
Every three to five years PMI runs a Job Task Analysis, a global study of what working project managers actually do. The latest one showed the job has moved toward business value, governance, adaptive delivery, AI and sustainability, so the exam was rebuilt to match.

Current PMP exam format and structure
The exam opens with a case-study section, followed by independent questions. Predictive, agile and hybrid scenarios appear across all three domains, and you can expect governance, compliance and stakeholder-value situations, not just team conflicts.
The 2026 PMP exam at a glance

Breaks: the first comes after the case-study section; the second falls roughly midway through the independent questions. Once you start a break you can't go back to the previous section. The optional tutorial and post-exam survey don't count against your 240 minutes.
Question types you'll see
Case or Scenario: a detailed project or business situation, sometimes with charts, followed by several linked questions.Graphic-Based: interpret a burndown chart, risk matrix, Gantt chart or dashboard, then answer.Multiple choice and multiple response: still the bulk of the exam, nearly all written as situations.Interactive items: Enhanced Matching (drag and drop), Pull-down List and Point-and-Click hotspots.
How scoring works: PMI doesn't publish a fixed pass mark. Results are reported for each domain as Above Target, Target, Below Target or Needs Improvement.

People · 33% · 8 tasksLead the teamCommon vision, conflict, team leadership, stakeholder engagement, knowledge transfer and communication. Prepare with leadership styles, servant leadership and root-cause conflict resolution.
Process · 41% · 10 tasksDeliver the workDelivery approach, scope, value, resources, procurement, finance, quality, schedule and closure. Prepare with WBS, critical path and earned value plus backlogs, velocity and tailoring.
Business Environment · 26% · 8 tasksProtect the businessGovernance, compliance, change control, risk, continuous improvement and external change. Prepare with escalation paths, risk registers and how regulation changes scope.
The biggest shift: Business Environment more than tripled, from 8% to 26%. If your role is delivery-focused, give it dedicated study time. Try this: a new data-protection regulation affects a feature already in your backlog. How do you assess the impact and adjust the plan?
PMP exam changes and agile & hybrid project management
About 60% of current PMP questions involve agile or hybrid approaches, spread across all three domains. You need to understand Scrum, Kanban and iterative delivery, and know when to blend them with predictive planning.
Scrum: roles (product owner, Scrum master, developers), events and artifacts. Why predictive-only prep fails: the exam asks you to choose the right approach. If you only know waterfall, you'll pick answers like “escalate to the sponsor” or “update the baseline” when the scenario calls for a team-led, adaptive response.
PMP eligibility after the 2026 changes
You need 35 hours of project management training plus experience leading projects within the last 10 years. How many months you need depends on your education.

The process itself didn't change much in 2026, but the experience window and education tiers did. Here's the route most candidates follow.

What modern PMP questions look like
Today's PMP questions test judgment. You read a realistic situation and pick the best action for that context. These are original examples, not real PMI items.
HybridTwo teams, two methodsInfrastructure follows a fixed plan while the app team runs two-week sprints, and features keep waiting on servers. Best direction: agree a shared integration roadmap and dependency board rather than forcing one method on both teams.

How the PMP exam changes affect your preparation
Most working candidates need 8–12 weeks. These are the habits that matter most for the 2026 exam.

PMBOK® Guide vs ECO: the Eighth Edition, released in late 2025, emphasises principles, performance domains and value delivery. But the exam is built from the ECO, not the PMBOK Guide. Use the guide for concepts and vocabulary, and the ECO to decide what to study. Skip material written for the 2021 ECO or the Sixth Edition's 49 processes unless it has been updated.

PMI says the core principles and approaches remain the same, so your foundation still counts. Most candidates need two to four extra weeks for the new content.

If you don't pass the first time
You can attempt the exam up to three times within your one-year eligibility period. After three unsuccessful attempts, you must wait one year before reapplying.
