What counts as project management experience?
PMI wants proof that you led or directed projects. Your title doesn't need to say “Project Manager”: team leads, tech leads, coordinators and engineers often qualify if they owned project outcomes.

Tip: describe each project with your role, the approach used and the outcome, covering initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and closing. Clear, outcome-focused descriptions are approved faster and hold up in an audit.
How to count your experience months
The most common mistake is adding up project durations. PMI counts calendar months, so overlapping projects only count once.
Two projects that overlap by 6 months
24 moProject A: Jan 2022 – Dec 2023

42 moWhat counts: Jan 2022 – Jun 2025, not 48
Jul–Dec 2023 appears in both projects, so those 6 months count only once. With a bachelor's degree, 42 months clears the 36-month requirement; with an associate-level qualification it's short of 48.

35 contact hours: the PMP training requirement
Before you apply, you need 35 hours of project management education, unless you hold an active CAPM®. The course should cover predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, risk, stakeholders, scope, schedule, budget and leadership.

Can freshers apply for PMP certification?
Not yet. PMP needs at least 24–60 months of professional project leadership, and internships or academic projects don't count. But you can start building towards it today.

How to apply for the PMP exam
Once you've confirmed your route, the application itself is online and usually takes an evening if your project details are ready.
Step 1Create a PMI accountDecide on membership first; members pay a lower exam fee.
Step 2Add education and trainingEnter your highest qualification and your 35 contact hours (or CAPM).
Step 3Describe each projectRole, dates, approach and outcomes, without double-counting months.
Step 4PMI reviewUsually a few business days. Some applications are randomly picked for audit.
Step 5Pay the feeSee the latest PMP fee in India and confirm on pmi.org.
Step 6Book with Pearson VUETest centre or online, within your one-year eligibility window.
Documents and the PMP audit process
You don't upload documents when you apply, but you must be able to produce them if your application is randomly selected for audit. An audit isn't a failure; it's a verification step.
Education: a copy of your degree or diploma.Experience: verification from the supervisors or managers named in your application, confirming your project leadership.Training: certificates showing your 35 contact hours, or proof of an active CAPM.Consistency: your documents should match the project descriptions you submitted.
Tip: tell your supervisors in advance that PMI may contact them, and keep your training certificate where you can find it quickly.

What are the PMP eligibility criteria in 2026?
35 hours of project management training (or an active CAPM) plus non-overlapping project leadership experience from the last 10 years: 60 months with secondary school, 48 with an associate-level qualification, 36 with a bachelor's degree, or 24 with a PMI GAC-accredited degree.
How many years of experience do I need for PMP with a B.Tech or MBA?
36 months (3 years) of project leadership experience within the last 10 years, unless your degree is from a PMI GAC-accredited programme, in which case it's 24 months.
Can I apply for PMP without project management experience?
No. You need qualifying project leadership experience. If you're just starting out, build experience and consider the CAPM first.
Do I need the job title “Project Manager”?
No. What matters is that you led or directed project work. Team leads, tech leads, coordinators and engineers often qualify.
Does agile or Scrum experience count?
Yes. Predictive, agile and hybrid projects all count, as long as you had a leadership role.
Is the 35 contact hours requirement mandatory?
Yes, unless you hold an active CAPM. Self-study and practice tests don't count as training.
What changes for training on 1 December 2026?
Live instructor-led hours will count only when delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China REP or an eligible accredited programme. Self-paced courses remain eligible, and training completed before that date still counts.
Does internship experience count?
Generally no. PMI looks for professional project leadership experience, not internships or academic projects.
What happens if my application is audited?
PMI asks you to provide proof of education, training and experience verification before you can pay and schedule. Keep documents and supervisor contacts ready.
Does international experience count?
Yes. Project experience from any country and industry counts if it meets PMI's leadership and time-window requirements.
